Qing Yi: A Unique Tea Set Inspired by Chinese Opera

Bringing Literature and Art to Life

Inspired by the world-known Chinese writer Bi Feiyu's novel "Qing Yi," Cong Ma, a talented designer, has created a tea set that embodies the essence of Chinese opera. This innovative design combines traditional elements with modern aesthetics, resulting in a visually stunning and practical piece of art.

The "Qing Yi" tea set takes its name from the novel "Qing Yi," also known as "The Moon Opera," which has garnered international acclaim and was even adapted into Peking Opera and dance drama. Cong Ma's design aims to bring this popular literary work to life in a different art form, showcasing the contemporary philosophy of "living arts."

What sets the "Qing Yi" tea set apart is its unique design features. The handle of the tea pot is inspired by the graceful movement of swing sleeves in Peking Opera, while the knob draws inspiration from the intricate eye makeup worn by performers. The body of the tea set is shaped like a water drop, adding a touch of elegance and fluidity to the design.

The tea set is made using the famous Zisha firing technique, an intangible cultural heritage of China. Zisha clay from Yixing is used, which is known for its heat preservation and antiseptic properties, ensuring that the tea stays fresh for several days. The cup base is reminiscent of the carved windows found in classic Chinese gardens, while the side shape mimics the gentle waves of water, effectively transmitting the rich cultural heritage of Peking Opera through a simple and modern art design.

Measuring 162mm in width, 110mm in depth, and 128mm in height, the tea pot is a perfect blend of form and function. The cups, with a width of 66mm and a height of 30mm, complement the overall design aesthetic.

The "Qing Yi" tea set not only captivates with its visual appeal but also offers a unique interactive experience. The distinctive handle and the cup base design attract attention and invite users to explore the rich cultural symbolism behind the design. With its Zisha clay construction, the tea set ensures that the tea remains fresh and flavorful for an extended period.

The "Qing Yi" tea set project began in October 2017 in Nanjing, China, and was completed in January 2018. It will be exhibited at the Triennale di Milano in April 2018, showcasing the fusion of Chinese opera elements and novel works in artistic design. The design process presented several challenges, particularly in realizing the flying handle, but through extensive experimentation and refinement, the designers were able to overcome these obstacles and create a truly remarkable piece.

The "Qing Yi" tea set has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware, and Cookware Design category in 2018. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate innovation, practicality, and adherence to professional and industrial standards, making a positive impact on the world.

Cong Ma's "Qing Yi" tea set is a testament to the power of art and design in preserving and celebrating cultural heritage. By seamlessly blending traditional elements with contemporary aesthetics, this tea set not only serves its practical purpose but also tells a captivating story behind each sip.
